Garmin eTrex H GPS

The Garmin eTrex H GPS is the latest version of this entry-level model in the Garmin eTrex series to hit the market. This Garmin handheld GPS delivers great value in a basic GPS device.

Compact, lightweight, and easy to use, it provides reliable, basic navigation for hiking, hunting, fishing, and many other outdoor activities. The “H” signifies “high sensitivity”—not to be confused with older eTrex models which look similar.

The eTrex H GPS is small enough, measuring 4.4-inches tall, 2-inches wide, and 1.2-inches deep, to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. At 5.3-ounces it is lightweight and waterproof to IPX7 standards, meaning it can be submerged to 1 meter for 30 minutes. It is rugged enough for extended outdoor use.

The unit has a small 4-level monochrome screen that is 1.1-inches wide and 2.1-inces tall. Resolution is decent at 64 x 128 pixels.

Five buttons on the sides allow one-handed navigation.

The bright yellow case makes it easy to spot in your backpack, boat or car. It gets a respectable 17 hours of run time on 2 AAA batteries.

You can connect the unit to a computer via an optional serial cable to download waypoints and routes. However, it has no extra internal memory or memory card slot.

The eTrex H GPS has a high-sensitivity receiver, giving it the same fast and strong signal acquisition as much more expensive models. Be prepared for a long wait the first time you use it, as initial satellite acquisition took forever.

It can store 500 waypoints and 20 routes. There is no basemap, and no ability to add maps, so all you get is point-to-point navigation.

The TracBack feature will send you back to your starting point, following your outbound route. For advanced planning, you can manually enter waypoints, this is a slow and tediuos process, or download them from mapping software using a serial cable. There is no USB connection.

There is a hunting and fishing calendar, and sun and moon information.

The Garmin eTrex H GPS handles basic navigation very well. Signal acquisition is fast and accurate. The interface is simple and intuitive. The unit works well in a wide range of temperatures. The menu buttons don't stiffen up, even in very cold environments.

There is very little to complain about with the eTrex H GPS. The only real drawbacks are the lack of maps and the need to purchase an extra cable for connecting to a computer.

The fact that a serial cable is required is somewhat puzzling, since USB is the current standard. Many computers do not even have serial ports anymore, making an additional adapter necessary.

For a basic handheld GPS unit priced at under $100, you can't go wrong with the Garmin eTrex H Handheld GPS Navigator
